Mmmm.... this book was pretty much what I expected it to be. It is a first novel and there were parts where I was flipping through quickly and parts where I was fighting to keep my concentration on the book. The character of Temmperance Brennan seemed somehow underdeveloped and throughout a good portion of the book I felt myself yelling through the pages at her like in those horror movies where you know what they are doing is going to be bad and yet they do it anyways. I thought the ending was predictable... pretty much what I knew the entire book was leading up to... but I wonder if that is just a result of the mystery genre. Anywho... I imagine someday I will read another one of this series but at the moment I am in no hurry to do so.

4.5 stars. Dark, gory, realistic, deeply disturbing and seeping with mystery and twists. Tempe takes on on a medical anthropologists journey through some very nasty and too close for comfort cases she is involved in. We live every detail with her, all the descriptions graphically described and discussed. Yes, I enjoyed it thoroughly, even if it left my with an upset stomach.
My first reading of this author. I will read her work again, but I don't think I'll rush out to get it. I need a break.

Very slow going, I believe due to the French. I've heard from others that read Ms. Reichs work that her writing is very detailed.

What I Did Like:
-The characters. Although they’re not the ones you’ll know and love from the TV show, I did like the dynamics between Temperance and Detective Ryan. They play off each other nicely and set up a good working relationship that will carry the rest of the books in this series.
-Mistakes are made. That is always important in a book about solving a crime. It’s unrealistic to imagine a detective, or anyone working a case, will get it all right on the first try. I like the realism behind errors.
-The forensic connection is well written. Obviously, that is Kathy Reichs’ background and expertise so it makes sense that would be well done. The forensic science in this one is written in such a way that it doesn’t go over the reader’s head but also teaches you something.

Who Should Read This One:
-Fans of crime novels who are looking for something different will like the way this series takes a look at forensic anthropology as another avenue for crime solving.

My Rating: 3 Stars

If you like Bones I don’t know that I would recommend this to you. If you like gory thrillers ala Nora Roberts, I *would* recommend this to you. This is like if Bones was Criminal Minds-levels of violence and appears to be what the  Howard Epps storyline was based on.
