Very clever, Marsh. I see what you did there.

Also, I don't know how she does it: ten pages in, and I'm grumbling about how there isn't a murder yet. 20 pages in, and I'm invested in all these random weirdo characters (one of whom is going to die!) and their drama and I'm totally fine with taking our time to get to the actual murder.

Marsh's attitudes towards the Maori continue to fascinate me for their inconsistency.

I am also intrigued that in this book, the romantic hero and the romantic heroine didn't actually officially end up together at the end... I wonder if it's because Marsh was writing this during WWII? I wonder if her post-WWII books will reflect a change in attitudes? Hmmm...
