Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley.com for sending me this ebook in return for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this book as a stand alone, although it is number 25 in the Guido Brunetti series. Commissario Brunetti is asked to look into an accident that happened 15 years ago, by a family friend. The friend wants to know how her granddaughter was injured so severely that she is still brain damaged 15 years later. Brunetti agrees to look into the accident, even though he is not sure if it qualifies as a case.

Brunetti unravels the threads of this case with patience and tenacity, all the while dealing with a backstabbing colleague and Italian bureaucracy. I liked the author's sense of humor--comparing Italian bureaucracy favorably with Argentinian bureaucracy. A old friend of Brunetti's remarks, after returning from Argentina, "Compared to Argentina, we are living in Switzerland."

There are annoying formatting problems: a line of text stops halfway and drops down 1 or 2 lines even though it is not the end of a sentence. I do not recommend buying the kindle version of this ebook until the formatting issue is resolved.
I liked the ending and give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
