This was a cool collection of poems. I especially liked "What if Jesus was my big brother", "But why did you feel you had to kill yourself, baby lobe?", and "What if Magdalene seduced me?"

I love Akwaeke Emezi's novel writing but this poetry collection wasn't exactly my thing. The poems heavily lean on Christian imagery and violence, and the content kind of overpowered the craft. That made these poems get repetitive, too, and it got hard to stay focused. Also, I did not love the long strings of text without punctuation.
But there were some poems I really liked, especially in the beginning of this collection, like "Folding for a cruel man", "Excommunication", and "Self-portrait as a cannibal".

Graphic: Self harm, Rape, Child abuse, Violence, Suicide attempt, Domestic abuse, and Sexual violence

I’m going to preface this by saying there’s a few goodies in here but I can’t love a poetry collection that doesn’t know how to use grammar/ punctuation/fundamental literary needs in general correctly. Plus I think some people assume heavy subject matter with good art and that’s not always the case.
