this book so seamlessly describes maturing through war and all the loss that goes with it and the normal struggles that a 14/15 year old goes through like crushes and parent issues. it really became a heartwarming tear-jerker near those last two chapters (or maybe i’m just a baby).

TBTL has always been my favorite PJO book and rereading it just cements that love. Not only are some of the most iconic scenes of the series in this book (first percabeth kiss <3, Rachel’s blue hair brush, Nico’s Happy Meals), but the amount of character development we get fleshes out our protagonists so beautifully.

Throughout the whole series you see Percy be compared to Hercules fairly often, and Percy consistently shows that he is just a morally better hero than Hercules. He refuses to betray, plow over, or dismiss others in his quest and he does not seek fame or power above what is right. He is genuinely kind, thoughtful, and just. But a little oblivious when it comes to girls ;) There is also a lot of foreshadowing towards his offer of immortality in TLO, and you can see how Rick is setting up Percy’s decision to ultimately say no. And the reasoning behind it.

I feel that we get the most development out of Annabeth’s character in this book. In the previous novels she is always seen as the leader, the wiser and more reliable one. But her fatal flaw truly shines the most throughout this story, as her pride constantly gets the better of her. Her stubbornness and jealousy are constant companions during their quest and it makes her a much more holistic and relatable character.

Everything about this book is sheer perfection. It will always be a favorite and makes me super nostalgic and emotional.
