lent to me by my thesis advisor as an example of experimental presentation of what is technically “academic research.” really beautiful, finds a strange place between the literary retelling of an art house film and the encyclopedia entry this research was originally meant to produce. feels like fiction, nathalie legér and barbara loden share the role of protagonist.

Every page or so I had to stop reading and clutch my chest. The part with Mickey Mantle was especially sensational. 1093 stars out of 5.

Parts of this kind of breezed by me and parts of it have been with me for days. Blurred the biography line into something that felt as much about Loden as about me, about Leger, about her mother. As truthful as made up. As much about Wanda as about diner women and coal mining. I loved it.
