Cute, a little far-fetched, but fun. Silly at times, but written well enough. Good romantic comedy material. Would read another.

Holly Heckerling is back in Royce’s follow-up novel to her debut hit Monkey Love! Monkey Star picks up a few months after the time where Monkey Love left off. Holly and Tom are set to celebrate their anniversary, and of course Holly finds herself in a predicament that you have to read about to believe.

Once she gets herself untangled, Holly finds that her relationship with Tom may not be on as solid ground as she thought. He’s spending more time with his ex-wife and seems to always put Holly last. On top of everything else, she’s bounced one too many checks and now her landlord wants her out of her apartment post haste. Needing time and space to think, Holly goes to visit her best friend Carter who’s now living in L.A. with her husband, Danny.

Danny, Holly’s former partner in comedy, has landed a role in a movie and invites Holly to visit him on the set. Through a series of twists and turns, Holly ends up as the movie’s new animal trainer. As if trying to figure out how to make a snake climb on cue wasn't enough to deal with, Holly’s also realizing that the movie’s leading man is very interested in her. Holly must decide if there’s any compelling reason to return to New York, when L.A appears to have everything she wants, and more.

Monkey Star is a lot of fun and those who read Monkey Love will likely enjoy this tale as well. Although Monkey Star is a sequel, it stands alone well, and Love need not be read first. Royce’s writing is fresh and engaging. All of the characters have distinct personalities, and seem to jump off the page at times. Brenda Scott Royce is definitely one of my new auto-buy authors!
