This was a good book. I liked the POV change and it continued the overall plot well.

I enjoyed learning more about the individuals in this universe and seeing the dragonets of destiny evolve further. I thought Tsunami had excellent character development, and we learned a lot about her as a young dragon, as well as her feelings regarding her fellow dragonets and the seawing kingdom. The author did an excellent job explaining the places, tones, and atmospheres without overwhelming readers with too much information. The writing was simple but entertaining and informative. This book's plot was quite well thought out, and I enjoyed it. The mystery of who was murdering Queen Coral's heirs was intriguing, adding a good sense of intrigue and suspense to the plot while also providing insight into the power dynamics of the seawing kingdom. I liked this book better than the first because there was less information dumping and more character and plot progression. I'm enjoying this series and intend to continue with it.

Strong character growth, particularly interrogating the idea of leadership.

Trust, family, protection, with a quiet nod to education and literature.

Tsunami not having learnt her native language of Aquatic was a lovely touch.

I really liked this one, maybe even more than the first book! It was a quick exciting read with plenty of twists and turns. I like the colorful descriptions of the setting and characters that the author uses, it makes it reading a sensory experience for me.
There are a lot of characters, so keep them all straight in my mind, I made a list so I can keep track of who is who and what they look like.

The Lost Heir picks up where the first book left off and reveals a lot about the sociopolitical climate of the SeaWing kingdom, where Queen Coral literally controls the narrative.

After losing her friends' trust, Tsunami is propelled forward on a personal journey that calls into question her leadership skills and never quite forgets the fact that she is still conflicted about killing that feral SeaWing in Scarlet's arena. She likes feeling strong and intimidating, but she struggles to understand why her friends are scared of that strength when she is just trying to keep them safe in the only way she knows how (in a way that runs interestingly parallel to Kestrel). And after being held prisoner underground for her entire life so far, she had latched onto the childlike idea that being royalty (and a dragonet of prophecy) is a form of freedom where she gives the orders and everyone else follows without question - except now she may end up under the watchful talon of yet another overbearing guardian!

The story sets Tsunami up for a hard lesson about how leadership requires communication and teamwork, and how sometimes talking and really listening is more effective than intimidation tactics. After all, learning to be less impulsive and value working as a group are strengths in and of themselves! The burden of responsibility is much lighter when shared, especially when that burden is a prophecy that has been called into question yet again. This time, readers are prompted to wonder just how authentic this prophecy is when seemingly every party with an interest in upholding it appears to have ulterior motives.

i live for shit like this!! the lost heir expands wonderfully on the last book with its new character voice and themes and worldbuilding (i could read CHAPTERS about aquatic it is such a fascinating base for a language). i think the way tui sutherland writes fits these books very well and i could tell there was a lot of love and care to the cast of characters, and it was executed in such a good way. tsunami's story is so heartbreaking and i couldn't help but root for her through the whole thing, and i loved the development she was given as a character and her relationships with queen coral and her family. overall i am so so psyched to start the next one and recommend this series to everyone !! ALSO DRAGONS
