I haven't much experiance with Miss Day's work, I've only read the Crossfire novels which i don't mind saying were very entertaining. If you've read the first book, then you'll knew what to expect in this. My only real gripes with this book however is did the author speak to any historians of the period this book is set? I needed a dictionary to understand some of the dialogue, and where is the classasic english curses? I know a lot of american's think that we english talk like there is silver spoon in place of our tongues but really, this took it a bit far.

Was this a bad book? No. Was it drowning in cheesiness, contrived plot lines, and eye-roll-worthy sex scenes? Oh yeah.

Recently widowed Elizabeth is out of mourning and is being pursued by Marcus, the man who cheated on her and sent her running to marry her now deceased husband, Hawthorne. At the same time, apparent bad guys are trying to get a journal from her that was left by Hawthorne, who was also an employee at some sort of unspecified law enforcement "agency."

Obviously they get together, with her being the naïve and inexperienced one who is supposed to be strong and independent but almost immediately succumbs to Marcus's charms and seduction, which is really annoying. I get that this is a familiar trope in period romances, but I still don't like it. I also didn't like the constant back and forth of her wanting to commit to him and then pulling away from him a few pages later. It was unnecessary, much like, the majority of this plot.

Marcus eventually discovers who the traitor is in the agency and saves the day along with Elizabeth's brother. Elizabeth ends up getting pregnant (her potential fertility issues show up as a very last minute plot line at the very end) and they live happily ever after.

Characters and plot both get a 5 out of 10. I give the steaminess factor a 7 out of 10. There were a lot of sex scenes but whether or not you like them will depend on your tolerance of descriptions like, "she took his manhood in between her silky folds." For me, it's more amusing than sexy, but no shade if that's your thing. Overall I give this book a C-.

This is one of the worst pieces of garbage I have ever read.
There are several reasons for this:
1. The first "sex scene" is rape. She says no, tries to get away, and he ties her up and proceeds to do whatever he wants with her without her consent. THIS IS NOT OKAY!!
2. See #1
3. See #2
4. Before the first sex scene is the first kiss scene, which happens to be the first time the characters have seen each other in 4 years, also happens to be an assault. She tries to get away, pushes him away, yet he still claims that she is his because they were engaged 4 years ago. NOPE!
5. Ignoring #1-4 for the moment, both Marcus and Elizabeth are so freaking annoying and dramatic. If they just talked to each other like rational people, so much would have been solved. Instead of good drama, it was just freaking annoying. Plus I did not feel any relationship between them. They would just get mad at each other and then end up in each other's beds without any resolution. I absolutely hated both of them.
6. The "mystery" of the journal is stupid and I figured it out within a few pages of learning about it.
7. The effing patriarchy.
8. See #1!!!!!!!

Dear God, don't read this book. I only finished it because it was a book club book and I plan on ripping it to shreds when we discuss it.

This one was just not good. The characters weren't likeable or relate-able at all, so the sex just ended up being boring. If you don't care about the characters, it's hard to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy the rest of the book.

I think a large part of the problem was that it felt like you only ever got half the story. Jumping into the middle of the relationship between Marcus and Elizabeth really hurt the story, because it left you with no idea why they felt and acted the way they did. You also missed out on any fun moments between them before they had all the emotional baggage they brought into the renewed relationship.

In short, starting the book in the middle of the characters' story (while it's an interesting idea for the structure of the book) left me with no way to connect to the characters and I just didn't care if they worked it out or not, so I ended up skimming a lot of the book.

Overall I did enjoy this read. I did find the characters to be a bit flippant in their feelings for each other and I wish that the main plot had been a bit better developed to help drive the story along. The plot idea was excellent but the author spent a little too much time on their relationship for my taste, even considering that it's a romance novel.
