I love the characters Sáenz has created: Ari, Dante, and their parents. I love that he creates teenage boys who talk about books, poetry, astronomy and art, boys who wonder "when will I know who I am?", boys who don't like shoes and who try to save birds. I love that he writes parents who love their boys so deeply and see (and accept) who they are even when the boys can't quite accept it themselves.

I loved this book. It is really beautiful. Some things like lived in no particulate order:
-stared bipoc kids, but wasn’t about racism (this is actually rare)
-had queer characters, and had queer characters discovering their queerness in really authentic ways
-had loving parents who were flawed, but again in very authentic ways. I can’t think of very many coming of age stories where the parents are but the issue, and it is special. As a parent I found the story line of transition from caretaker to friend in the late teen year for these parents to also be so wonderful.

This book explores what it means to be an adult, what it means to be loyal, all different kinds of love, and how to fully know yourself. I loved it
