I think I enjoyed the idea of this book from the description more than I enjoyed the actual book. Wasserman can certainly write well, but it turns out that this just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Mother Daughter Widow Wife was a slow burn that never quite picked up for me. It follows the mysterious Wendy Doe, found on a bus with no memory, and the two researchers, Lizzie and Dr. Strauss, who observe her. And twenty years later, along comes Alice, the daughter left behind by Wendy Doe that so desperately wants to find her mother.
I was able to predict what the ending would be, but it was a wild, dark, depressing ride to get there. Ultimately it didn’t sit well with me, though I suppose I can see why the author went where she did. Overall, not my favorite.
Graphic: Infidelity
Moderate: Rape and Sexual assault
Minor: Miscarriage and Alcoholism
