Looking at gender reversal universes is always fun for me. And another introduction to a new character for this Enterprise.

The best part of this collection is the "Captain Jane Kirk" story. It could have been a simple gender flip, but some elements of female officers in a typical patriarchal world are explored. The 0718 story was OK but I would have preferred a origin that was a little more, um, human. Finally, the "Lost Apollo" started as a "planet paradise" type tale but had a nice twist.

I have consistently ranked the novels in this series highly. I've enjoyed each and every one of them immensely.

But this one, this one irritated me, for the same reason a lot of fucking books irritate me.

We really couldn't have just had a fun crossover with the Enterprise crew meeting their gender-bended selves, could we? Nooo, we have to throw little jabs in there about misogyny and how Jane Kirk isn't treated well by command because she's a woman.

It was the same shit I see in way too much media nowadays: We have to throw that bone to the audience, we have to show them how Aware™ we are about ~women's rights~ and ~misogyny~ and the fricking ~glass ceiling~ (which is strongly alluded to when Jane is talking with the Admiral).

Point being, claiming that Jane Kirk was being discriminated against because she was a female captain was a cheap, irritating thing that didn't need to be there. It truly and honestly did not. And it came off as more than a touch disingenuous given the setting, since this is a GENDER-BENT UNIVERSE, and that means that the majority of the Enterprise's crew would be FEMALE.

Female CAPTAIN. Female FIRST OFFICER. Female CHIEF ENGINEER. Female CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER. Female HELMSMAN. Female NAVIGATOR.

See how stupid Jane's claim that the Admirals were intimidated by a young female captain sound, in that context? Women literally dominate the flagship of the goddamn Federation!

It aggravates me because in the side-stories (the games, the comics, the novels), it's strongly implied that Jim Kirk got a lot of the same flack for being so young, "he hasn't paid his dues" and all that. But when Jane Kirk gets flack- well gosh, that must be misogyny, and not because any and all Admirals would be uncomfortable with someone that young, and that headstrong piloting the flagship of the Federation, their sex be damned.

This could have been a fun little story, but instead I had to be reminded about how my sex can't be represented in the media without having a Serious Talk moment where we acknowledge the Hidden Misogyny in the world. I'd have been pleasantly surprised if the story had avoided doing the "now let's look at the camera and give everybody the obligatory reminder that teh menz will always want to keep women down", because tbh I was expecting it when I realized the plot of the story. I got exactly what I was expecting to get, and not in a good way.

The rest of the book was fine, five stars easily. But I have no patience left for this business of shoehorning stupid examples of 'misogyny' into fiction so the creator can get ass-pats for how Aware™ they are.

This series has such good, Star Trekky stories.

I love this series. It does such a good job of telling stories that capture that old school Trek vibe. I particularly liked the story about the misplaced astronaut. Bonus points for the Geordi cameo.

The alternate timeline story was intersting. Not the best entry in the series, though. It was funny watching the two Uhuras.
