I was really geared up to like this book. Unfortunately, after a rather dull and tedious opening with expounded details about costumes, one line in the book really killed it. One of the characters objects to a 'rune reading' about her by a friend "...because God said 'Thou shalt not permit a witch to live.'"

Okay, I'm sorry, but why would anyone in our modern day need to quote that section of the Bible? Anyone who's studied even just a little of this Exodus verse can learn the translation of the verse's root word, mekhashepha, instead of 'witch,' actually refers to evildoers associated with pagan practices and should not be translated as witch or sorcerer. Secondly, the Bible is an interpretation by ancient man of God's will. Its not a perfect translation either as everything Jesus taught in the first Century A.D. slaps those old testament stereotypes to the curb, particularly not allowing people to live who think differently. Love, not burn, the witches!

Sadly, though, I just didn't find the opening chapters engaging. I can see how SCA re-creationists would be drawn to Pulver's level of detail, but for laypeople, its really hard to follow. I really thought the setting would make for a delightful cozy. I tried hard, but I just couldn't get excited about this story.

I received a free copy of this book at a Twin Cities book festival. Many thanks to Ms. Pulver.
This in no way has biased my review of the book.
