A book that pulls you deep in, so much so that for a while, you feel yourself lost when you get back to the real world. Absolutely loved the blend of different elements in the story, the historical bits, just everything actually.
I only wish the ending had been a bit different. It kind of leaves us on a vague note.. wanting more.. certain questions unanswered, especially about the characters... We're sucked so deep within that it's almost sad to know this book is the only place where we get to be with them, and that they're not actual 'living' people.

Qayyum Gul leaves home to join the Indian Army and suffers a life-changing injury at Ypres. Vivian Rose Spencer leaves home to care for injured soldiers. Their paths cross when Vivian sets off for Peshawar and Qayyum returns home. I suspect that I would have enjoyed this book more if I could have spent more time with it in larger chunks.

Not my favourite of her novels but still streets ahead of others. Kamila Shamsie weaves architeology, history, myth and legend into tge fascinating tale of Viv Spencer, a rogue female ripping up the rule book of what was expected of English ladies through the first half of the 20th century.
As always the prose is beautiful, her characters sensitively drawn despite their faults. I can picture every scene in my mind's eye. She is a masterful storyteller, gripping this reader to the end.
