L'histoire était plaisante à lire, facile et on avait envie de savoir la suite. La fin est intéressante parce qu'il y a un tel mythe autour du personnage d'Isabelle qu'on a du mal à s'imaginer comment elle est réellement.
Par contre, j'ai trouvé que l'histoire manquait de détails permettant de connaître les personnages, de se forger une idée des sentiments du protagoniste et même de s'imaginer les lieux. J'ai aussi eu du mal à éprouver de la sympathie pour Gérard Lacase (alors que c'était quand même le but) , qui était quand même assez malsain à espionner les gens et dont la naïveté par rapport à Isabelle était franchement agaçante.
En plus de ça, ça n'a pas aidé de savoir que l'auteur était pédophile.

D'un point de vue scientifique je trouve ça interessant de lire, de temps en temps, des histoires/récits écrites dans un discours patriarcal. Je trouve que ça vaut la peine de les analyser car ils font partie du discours qui a longtemps été le dominant. C'est dans cette optique que j'ai apprécié cette nouvelle, écrite par un homme, narrée par un narrateur homme racontant l'histoire d'une femme qu'ils jugent dans les normes sociales de leur temps (la nouvelle a été publiée en 1921). C'est clair que d'un point de vue moral je ne suis pas d'accord et je ne crois pas qu'elle plairait à des lecteur.rices contemporains.raines qui ne sont pas à la recherche d'exemples de litérature propagant un discours patriarchal. Pourtant il faut noter que, effectivement, Gide savait bien écrire, c'est de la belle prose bien composée. Et comme c'est court, c'est pas un mauvaix choix pour ceux.elles qui veulent lire des livres par tous les prix nobel de litérature.

Tehnically you can experience this book just by reading the synopsis honestly. The story and characters weren't that interesting but I do enjoy Gides writing style and the overall kijda cozy and isolated atmosphere he created here.

That's a short novel of barely 170 pages or a short story.
But the atmosphere is a bit like the novel of Grand Meaulnes by Alain Fournier: a castle lost in the moor where a family of impoverished nobles lives and where Isabelle, the young baroness, appears and fascinates the storyteller of the story with her beauty 'history. So we can dream, and that's what I did.

kudos to andre gide for lowkey disapproving lacase falling in love with a 10 year old portrait. short and sweet, just the piece to read when you're feeling guilty at 3 am for not reading a few days. on the other hand, this review is exactly the proof you need to say that i lack in critical thinking skills and reading time and respect for well known authors.
