I couldn't finish this alas. The insight into modern Indian history and caste politics was very interesting, but I couldn't get into the book itself. I feel bad, I wanted to like this so much! The narration felt kind of choppy and sometimes more like one of those round robins awful families send, where the narrator spends a lot of time telling you how wonderful their family is and how liked by everyone they are. The lack of critique is sometimes quite uncomfortable - the narrator's great uncle both gropes a woman at a temple and pushes his grandmother over, causing so much damage that she can never walk unassisted again, but it seems like it's excused and papered over.
