The first half of the book was a little slow, but I think that was because the author did a lot of world building and character development in the beginning. I feel like even though it was a slow start, it was worth it. The author did a great job creating a lot of depth within the characters and the world. Once I was about 45% in, the plot really picked up. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series.

This book was pretty incredible and I kept picking it up wanting to read more. The cover itself is a draw in and I love how it depicts a major scene in the book. The characters in this book are round and interesting including the minor characters which I think is really important.

Reading something that is straight high fantasy reminded me of reading Lord of the Rings, but this book stands on its own. The world is masterfully crafted and feels steeped in history. It is expansive. I like the glossary of terms and names in the back of the book, I referenced that a decent amount of times while reading the story.

I think my favorite character is Persephone, but all of the characters were fun to read from the pov of (excluding Gryndal and Mawyndule’s povs.) Speaking of characters, at first I really wasn’t interested in Arion’s pov and didn’t particularly like the character. Felt somewhat neutral towards her but she developed as a character the further I got into the story. My heart softened towards her by the time we got to the scene where her and Suri interact with the juggling, etc. Suri was such a great character, I really loved her.

Favorite quotes:

Page 89
The Crescent Forest was our neighbor. A place so vast no one knew all its secrets. From its trees, Dahl Rhen was built. From its animals, Dahl Rhen was fed. And from its darkness, a hero was made - The Book of Birn

Whenever people ask about Persephone, I tell them how she could not card wool. I think it is important for people to know she was human - The Book of Brin

I like how the Book of Brin excerpts that are at the top of each chapter actually add to the story rather than being something that I tolerate. It really adds to the epic feel of the story because it is proof of the events that happen in this story being history and of great importance.

I love the scene where we get a formal introduction of Grygor the giant. It was pretty amusing.

I definitely want Persephone and Raithe to end up together but I
like how Persephone doesn’t just start something romantic with him when he expresses his interest in her. It is a lot more realistic for her to wait as she is a pretty new widow. I also like that we are left not being sure how she feels about Raithe in that way. I also like that the end of the book solidified Raithe’s belief that he really likes Persephone and as he said to Malcom wants to “go where she’s going.”

All in all I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves high fantasy. Michael Sullivan might just be a new favorite author of mine now (of which I don’t really have many) and I am definitely eager to get into the second book in this series which I thankfully already have ready to go. I am happy to see where the story goes from here.

Great fantasy world. Draws you in quickly despite the numerous races and names to learn, and learn to care about characters quickly.
