An enjoyable meditation on the meaning of paths and discovery.

This was fine — kind of hit or miss. Ekelund's descriptions of walking adventures were interesting but his philosophizing felt very surface.

"The path is reminiscent of folktales both in its essence and in its creation. No single person is responsible for a path; instead, it is the sum of the actions of numerous people over a period of time that dates back to the distant past. As such, paths are like stories."
***
"The pilgrimage is a fellowship. Young people walk in the footsteps of the old, and the needs are the same today as they were when the trail was walked for the first time."
***
My first official read of the summer was such a wonderful treat. Ekelund retraces history and philosophy around paths as well as his own personal journey in taking paths when a medical diagnosis bars him from driving again. He mixes research with memoir so well, from proposing slow ontologies to interviews with great walkers to famous pilgrimages around the world. Everything always comes back to relationship of people between people and people between the land. It is *just* the right length, not too long and not too short. OKC friends, this one is at the library if you want to read it as well- it goes quick but is so good! Thanks @torbeke for your work and this book!
