I love bell hooks and have read other of her work. I love how she adds her experience as a professor, critiques academia, and also writes about the successes and failures she has encountered. I saw a lot of my experiences in the classroom in what she was sharing, and absolutely loved the exercise of making sure every student is heard. Again, she writes with such care and compassion, while also enforcing her critiques.

I have such a huge place in my heart for bell hooks, as her writing was really pivotal for me as I was entering college at 25. In Teaching to Transgress, hooks writes about the intersection of race, gender, class, and feminism as they emerge, disrupt,  exist, and are problematized in academic institutions. I agree with takes that claim the book is more theoretical than practical, but I don't always think it's the job or task of the writer to spoon feed you directions on how to incorporate their writing into your everyday life. Obviously the book was written in the mid 90's so - things have changed, but I still firmly believe there is a lot to be gained from engaging with hooks' work. I think it's a great and important read for teachers, although it is more geared for those at the university level.

I love bell hooks!!! As someone in the education space, albeit elementary not college, this was so inspiring for me as an educator. hooks has this uncanny ability to make people think outside of the box, and I realized so many things about myself and our education system and how all the systems in our society interact and what we can do to change them. It gives me hope for education, while also enlightening me to just how difficult being a teacher truly is if you want to do it justice.
