Though it took about 60 pages, this book is worth your time. Joukhadar paints with words! Colors and senses splash together creating an amazing sensual experience!

I didn't want it to end. There was so much detail and it left me on the edge of my seat.

Disclaimer: I listened to this one, but I think there are parts of this one that are in free verse.

Two beautiful stories set hundreds of years apart. The first story is that of Nour, a modern-day American-born Syrian girl who returns to Syria after the death of her father with her mother and two older sisters. Because Nour is the only family member to be born in the US, she doesn't feel that she has a real sense of home. Just months after arriving in Syria, her family finds themselves on the run from the turmoil facing that nation today. Their journey takes them through many countries, trials, heartaches, and losses.

Mirroring Nour's story is that of Rawiya. This story is one that Nour's Baba told her again and again. Rawiya, the daughter of a destitute widow, cuts her hair and sets out on an adventure as a map maker's apprentice. Rawyia's physical journey is a reflection of Nour's present-day physical journey. So much of what Nour has learned from this ancient story from her father helps her traverse her treacherous path to safety.

And Nour has synesthesia. Could this story get any more beautiful? Or heartbreaking?

Absolutely freaking magnificent. Nour was the most honest and wide-eyed narrator.

Percebi que estava lendo de qualquer jeito então preferi deixar pra lá.

I read this book as part of the Shelterbox bookclub. I was unsure to begin with as the chapters are long and the text small. However I soon became sucked into the two intertwining stories of the journeys of Nour and Rawiya. I enjoyed both timelines, and cannot pick my favourite. The more I read the more I wanted to keep reading, but equally didn’t want it to end. The writing was difficult to begin with, but once tuned in, it was beautiful, lyrical and painted amazing images in my mind. The stories were heart rending, exciting and heart warming.
I absolutely loved this book. I would never have picked this up - so thank you to Shelterbox - but I am so glad I have read it.
