This book was wonderful. I wasn't prepared for the emotional investment! The story was both heartbreaking and eye opening. I loved the dual storyline. This really put a voice to the Syrian refugee crisis and I'm so glad I read it.
This is a cute story. I always like books that weave together a story in the past and one in the present—this one in particular beautifully mirrored the two parts.
The language is very colorful, literally. Scents and sounds are described with colors. It got to the point where it started to seem like weak writing—is color the only way the author knows how to describe things?? But around 75% of the way through, you learn that it has a clever narrative purpose. So, all is forgiven.
I really like stories set during the Golden Age of Islam—it was a creative and prosperous time, and so stories based on that tend to be richly creative as well.

Not for me. Could not stand the overly lyrical language and non-stop metaphors. Rawiya's story did nothing for me, I would have much preferred more detail into Nour and her family's refugee storyline.

I loved this book! The sumptuous colors and smells, the interplay between the legend and the contemporary story, the exploration of familiar relationships drew me in from the first sentence to the concluding spot.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s hard to get into because her writing style is so unique, but she does an excellent job weaving themes throughout the book and making them blossom at the end.
