River East, River West is an exploration of growing up and belonging in China and America. It centres around a family after Alva's mother marries a man she met a long time ago.
This book is one of those rare breeds, having characters who are flawed and unlikeable for most of the book, but never making the book unreadable. It is also an intimate exploration of Chinese identity, particularly for those with mixed parentage.
It wasn't my favourite of the Women's Prize books but was a worthy contender. As a note on the audiobook - it was read well, but the male reader read all the female and young characters in bit of a pathetic way, which ran counter sometimes to their actual moods and personalities.
