conceptually and intellectually an awesome book and wonderful to think with, but this was a terrible reading experience. avant-garde but not in the way that is awe-inspiring and expansive. i could tell without much knowledge of the french text that the translation probably has a lot to do with my reading experience, as using “elles” in french is a much more grammatically rebellious decision than the translators choice of “women”. the notion of gender warfare and the ideas that wittig puts forth in the book are stunning and can definitely make the book worth reading if you’re willing to go deeper than the text.

The form of the book is unusual. It’s a series of paragraphs that don’t always make sense as a story. Small sections pulled me along because they were so harshly true, or beautiful. Eventually the story emerged, and it was interesting, but not as good as the little pieces taken individually. This is a radical book about the power of women, their bodies, language, symbols and circles. Shocking to read, sometimes tenderly familiar, other times sickeningly strange.

This is such a lit read. The violence is so on point and riveting and it was refreshing to see a revolution talked about episodically rather than as a total narrative.
