Like if Rae Dunn wrote Twilight.

I really wanted to like this, I enjoyed the first one and was excited to see where this led, the story itself us interesting enough but good lord, the characters have become INSUFFERABLE.

Poppy is such a pick-me, all of their personalities (Poppy/Cas/Keiran) fell flat, they were all written in the same tone. Keiran was particularly annoying, I wanted to like him but it was the same conversation over and over and it was CRINGE af anytime he interacted with Poppy.
This is a direct quote (no spoilers but I will put in a spoiler tag anyways)
“That’s an incredibly random question.”

It was. “I’m beginning to realize I’m an incredibly random person.”

This type of interaction of Poppy desperately trying to be qUiRkY and not-like-other-girls™️ was painful. She reminds me of Boxxy.

Also, Malik's name was spelled both with c and a k, interchangeably throughout and I found the way that the dialogue was written made it unclear of who was speaking.

Honestly, not sure if I will continue this series and if I do, I will DNF immediately if literally ANYONE mentions how many questions Poppy asks (is that not how conversation works??) Keiran and Cas are starting to give me the ick, and give off "hewwo pwincess" *tips fedora* type vibes and I was cringing hard in the annotations the entire time.

I adored this book! It was spicy, it was intriguing, it was mysterious and action-packed in a way that wasn't tiring.  This author makes combat/high drama scenes really interesting to read, and the romantic aspect of the story was so good (even though, yes some of the dialogue and inner monologuing was a little repetitive, I didn't mind!).  I love this thrup... couple, loved the twists, and am looking forward to joining these characters for the next one!

The plot is painfully slow and the writing is extremely repetitive. Barely anything happens in the entire book. The ending is exciting, but it took 600 pages to get to it!!! Not to mention, the main love interest repeatedly sexually manipulates the main character and/or completely disregards her explicitly saying “no” to sexual actions. This book was hard to read for multiple reasons. I will never understand the hype.

Used to love this series but now see many glaring issues and honestly would rather read more diverse books than this.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕  Because this book is more focused on the relationship between Poppy and Casteel than anything else, it was much slower to start and had less political intrigue than the previous one.

⁕ While very spicy, the dialogue was repetitive and -- when I was not in the right mindset for it -- felt boring.

⁕ The character development for Poppy and Casteel was definitely there, I just wanted more of it.
