As expected, I'm crying.

I'm always crying when it comes to June and Day - they are and remain one of the very best written relationships I've come across yet. I adored their original trilogy both when I read and recently, as I reread the series for the first time in 5 years to prepare for Rebel.

We rejoin our star-crossed lovers eventually in Rebel, but this story's heart lies with Day (now best known by Daniel) and Eden. The story is the aftermath of the original war - now in Ross City, the pair struggle to connect, to communicate, to understand each other. Daniel leaves his past behind, while Eden feels almost doomed and drawn to remain within it. Though this book comes years after Champion's end, Marie Lu still captures a lot of the magic that I love about the original trilogy: political unrest, the grayness of government and patriotism, a desire to seek change, and - most importantly - a desire to find shared understanding, to know you are not alone with any burdens you carry. There's also some wonderful struggle for Eden's character as he learns how to become tje man he wants to be, and some wonderful heart to hearts between the siblings once they finally have a chance to listen to the other. Hurt and grief, Marie reminds us, can make you feel shut inside it, alone, no one to talk to. That's not always the case, and I love that she took time to work through the sheer trauma the Wings really grappled with in the past to help them grow and make them a bit more whole.

I loved the original series most for Day and June when I first read it. Their passion, their connection, and all the consequences tied up in their relationship made the series sing and often left me in tears! But, now that I've reread both the original books and finally read the series' proper conclusion, there's something I love even more about the series. I love the way Marie writes pain and grief and growing up; the way passion and a desire for change evolves, grows, shapes into something new. There's a healthy dose of learning balance in this book, something I enjoy.

It's important to remember that Rebel is more than a return to our favorite characters. It is a chance to see them grow up, to grow wiser, and to still completely kick ass when everything falls apart. The most important lesson I find in these series is sheer determination and willpower, to get up and keep trying, to let your voice be heard to make change. All the relationships in these series are a bonus (and, by the way, Daniel and June get an ending they absolutely deserve) to a smart, fully-realized concept and world.

I'll continue to look forward to all of Marie's books, just as this quarter will always, always hold a place in my heart that will never be erased.

I don't have a proper review, I just want to express how blessed I am that this book exists and that I can read it.

3.5/5 stars. This was not as exciting or original as the first three novels, but it was still entertaining. I am mostly disappointed that Eden’s plague-caused visual impairment was sort of glossed over, which didn’t make sense, instead of actually building a well-represented low vision character.

FINALLY I AM FINISHED WITH THIS SERIES!!!! I guess this was fine, a bit different from the others obviously since 1) there was a big gap between the og trio and this one and 2) no June POV unfortunately. Now, do I think that there was an attempt at like criticizing capitalism through the Level system? Well, yeah, but I didn’t like how Dominic was villainized. Like I knew it was coming, but I don’t see how it made sense for him to want to recreate the Level system from the top. Anyways. There was also a bit of too much romance to my liking. I mean, okay, sure we gotta have the Daniel and June second chance romantic sub plot. But why add Eden and Pressa to the mix? Why not have them be just friends?

rebel was a good conclusion to the series. although i really wasn’t too crazy about the initial set up of the book, i felt like it was good enough to wrap it up. i do feel like the beginning of every book in this series was incredibly boring but they pick up near the end, but overall it was okay
