I read this book immediately after finishing "Phasma" and was a bit disappointed. I absolutely loved "Phasma" and was ecstatic for 'Black Spire' to pick up immediately after the events of the first book. Overall I struggled with this book because it felt like two separate stories mashed into one - one that focused mainly on the development of the characters and one that was solely setting-based. We got such powerful introspection from both Vi and Cardinal that I thought really pushed both the story and the movement as a whole forward. However, much of the Batuu parts felt more like an ad than a part of the story. So much of the Batuu development was contradictory that I lost interest in the setting - every single character there is a gods fearing hardworking, helpful, loving friend but also the town is run by vicious criminal underlings that regularly bust heads and populate most of the bars, shops, and business - it just didn't make much sense to me. The ending was also a bit disappointing for me. I felt like the book probably should have ended on the second to last chapter, with the official last chapter becoming the epilogue, and the official epilogue just being cut altogether.  Overall I really enjoyed a lot of the character work being done and wish Disney allowed for the book to be mainly driven by that as opposed to Galaxy's Edge merchandising.

Listened to this audiobook with my family in the car while we were driving to Disney World to get us hyped for Galaxy’s Edge. While I liked the characters pretty well, I had several issues with the plot that made it hard for me to suspend my disbelief. Still, it was a lot of fun to see Vi walking around in the park.

Even without having read Phasma, I absolutely loved this book! Vi is a great character, and Archex is so complex! Both were incredibly interesting to follow through this little adventure to establish the Resistance hideout on Batuu.

I loved the way the author explored the trauma of both main characters and how they made peace with it. For all its traumatic events, Star Wars rarely explores the after effects on characters. It’s gotten better in written material over the years (THR doesn’t shy away from it), but it’s still marginal from what I’ve seen in both visual and written canon material. So to have not one, but both MCs learn to live with their trauma at each other’s hand is just *chef kiss*

All the characters were interesting, and – as a Disney World fan – I love learning more about the lore of Galaxy’s Edge. But Vi and Archex are definitely my favourite here. And Vi being ace and Archex being autistic-coded are just the cherry on top.

I shall now go back and read Phasma. I need to know how things happened for them to get there.

Dawson's characters are real and raw. The most incredible thing about the book is her female characters. Often in the sci fi world, there is one token woman trope. In Dawson's book there are many women and they are not tropes. They are real, messy, and fabulous. The story was captivating, but the characters are what sold the book for me. I have not read Phasma, but I went out and bought it and plan to start it very soon. The book ends with making us believe there will be a third book, and I hope that is the case. I will go out and get it as soon as it is released.
