To put it gracefully the narrative style didn't age gracefully but it is a golden age of sci do novel and it reads like one. But I like the nostalgia to be honest. Not to mention it goes into DiGriz's origins. Only niggle I have is, this book is very naive in its outlook on human behavior and responses.

I have fond memories of this series from my high school days. If I recall, this wasn't the best of the bunch so I'll continue my trip down memory lane.

This short book had a lot of the strut and attitude I remember liking. I find the main character to be fun and cheeky in a satisfying way. His distaste for killing and roguish nature still amuses.

The writing is rough sometimes and it has these maddening sentence fragments that drive me up the wall. Neither overshadow the compelling elements. I guess voice wins.

When a man steals from and defrauds people, it's because he's a noble renegade fighting against the system. When a woman steals from and defrauds people, it's because she's a golddigger who deserves to be humiliated for her horrible, horrible crime.

I shouldn't have started the series with the prequel. "A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born" is the story of how James DiGriz went from teenage punk to...well, teenage punk with purpose, I guess. Had I started with "A Stainless Steel Rat," maybe I would have enjoyed it more, but I have an aversion for origin stories, and I didn't have any attachment to the character, so a lot of the events and character developments didn't mean anything to me.
