I think this might have been my favorite one yet. Definitely getting A Secret History vibes.

Elizabeth C. Bunce has done it again!

I'd like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this lovely book. I'd like to thank Elizabeth C. Bunce for bringing Myrtle into existence because clever Victorian girls solving crimes and committing capers is a niche genre I never knew I needed in my life.

I think of all the books in the series so far, this is my favorite. We learn more about Myrtle's mother, and we revisit with some of the characters from prior books, which even, when brief, is a delight. We meet some new ones too whom I hope show up in future installments.

I appreciate the research Bunce did to bring this book to life, the little nods to historical occurrences tickle my fancy.

I know if I were a little girl, I would have loved reading about Myrtle's adventures, and I'd be looking for mysteries to solve. Of course, hopefully I wouldn't come across a murder.

I loved everything about this book!
This was absolutely my favorite book in the series so far. The type of murder mystery this one was immediately had my interest and kept my interest throughout the whole book.
The characters were fantastic as always. Myrtle is so sassy and funny and just a wonderful (if mischievous) role model for young girls. Miss Judson is so accepting of Myrtle and even helps her with her escapades. Myrtle's dad has a great relationship with her (including discipline when she goes too far). Mr. Blakeney is still calling Myrtle Stephen and I think that's just fantastic. We also meet Imogen Shelley, a reporter who turned out to be one of my favorite characters and LaRue gets a bigger part in this one.
The writing style is so easy to blow through and I just love the footnotes Myrtle puts in there. I was laughing so many times and so intrigued the whole time I was reading.
We start out the book with the immediate natural death turned murder of a shop owner, Mr. Leighton. As Myrtle and the police put the clues together, and another murder happens, they realize this could be the ghost of Olive Blackwell come to avenge her death. As a college student, she fell (or was pushed?) from the bell tower at her college, but her body was never found. This type of mystery, murder, and past scandal just really had me absolutely hooked from page one. The pacing was never off, I really just wanted to keep reading every time I was forced to put the book down.
This being a middle grade, it didn't always read like one because it's about murder. I definitely recommend this amazing series to young and old readers alike!
Thank you to AlgonquinYR for an arc of this book!
