This was a good book, but dark! Almost depressing, so much dysfunction and mistrust. So disturbing because it sadly could be real life. Disgusting that there are people out there that do these kinds of things. Not sure 8 can recommend.

When you read a Karin Slaughter book, you know there's going to be a certain amount of "gross out violence". It's one of her "things" I think. There's a certain amount of "gross out violence", but I think that this book pulls its punches, which surprised me, as Slaughter had no problem grossing us out in the first book in the series.

In this book, a bunch of kids are roller skating on a Saturday night at a podunk Georgia town's skating rink. A kid comes up to them, and pulls a gun on one of them. The police intervene (the chief happens to be there with his girlfriend), and deal with the situation. The book deals with the fallout from a "nice" 13 year old suddenly pulling a gun.

The biggest problem with the book is that there isn't much of a story to the main story. As a consequence, we get some of the fallout from book 1 dealt with here, which would make people coming into this book cold slightly bemused, when they haven't read book 1.

All in all, this is one of the weaker Karin Slaughter books I've read.

3.75

Another book I lost sleep over.

The continued relationships in this book are excellent and so is the character development. I am going to rate this book 3.75 for a few reasons. I know that this was published nearly 20 years ago, but a lot of the discussion around genital mutilation lacked nuance. The ending was completely unsatisfactory in the way that it just so happened that Jenny became obsessed with it and wanted it for herself (I understand it was to stop the abuse). The twists in this series have so far been very well executed but this was a little tougher for me to go along with. I also didn’t really care for Lena’s character. From being a shitty cop, a shitty friend to Sara and being homophobic, it made it hard for me to have empathy for her in her monologue with Mark.

Overall, still really enjoyed the crimes and character dynamics. Hopefully this case resolves over the series.
