Great first-day-of-school read-aloud providing a model of how to be a positive influence in the classroom. I wish they had not included a point about how sharing food at lunch is a good thing to do; that can be dangerous for students with allergies. MJ, the main character, also bursts with confidence and does not have a hard time with anything at all. Readers can be inclusive of nervous children by asking students about how Rayna might be feeling and why she feels better when MJ reaches out to her. Additional discussion could include how some people are excited about new things, others are very nervous, and some feel in between.

What a beautiful book! A new Black classic picture book. A wonderful compliment to the King of Kindergarten. Definitely a book to have on your book shelf or give as a gift.

This book was so adorable to read with my precious niece, especially since it was a couple of days before she started Kindergarten herself!

MJ, with her tiara and rainbow-colored braids, absolutely slays on her first day of kindergarten... by being helpful and kind and having a great time while doing it.

Love the Easter egg of one of Barnes’ other books. I wish this one had been in second person like The King of Kindergarten and I think some of the energy here is weird like her mom telling MJ to be nice hits different when it’s said to a girl. But solid first day of school material from a power duo.

So fun to read a children's box with a strong narrator's voice! A typical story about the first day of kindergarten. A well written story with great pictures.
