Highly recommend you listen to the audiobook so you can hear the stories in Mr. Fierstein's voice.
If you love live theater, you'll love this book. If you love great characters and storytelling, this is for you. If you have an open heart, you will learn about amazing human beings and be inspired by their journeys.

I took a while to finish this book not because it’s bad but because I had so much to read before it, but it kept nagging at the back of my brain, Harvey’s voice calling “finish my book!” Because it was just that good and that interesting! Mr. Fierstein is a wonderful storyteller and writer (see his collected works and plays and tong awards along his acting accolades) and his life story is infused with his humor, humor even in the darkest of moments, which is a defense mechanism I think he developed in order to cope with the hard parts of life (especially as a gay man). So much so that reading it I wasn’t quite angered or upset, yes there were moments I felt great sympathy and heartbreak for him and what he has gone through, but I laughed through it and had hope for better, which is what I think the author intended. I related to many aspects of this book even though the author is several decades older than me (turning 70 in two days from when I’m writing this) because I think there are some human experiences and experiences being queer that are universal. Especially his coming out to his mom and dad and their gradual acceptance…well acceptance in their way. Very very good and so much fun to read.

Loved this book. I listened to the audiobook, read by Harvey himself. He’s an icon, a theater trailblazer, and just an amazing human.
