The boys love books that include Spanish words and they loved the adventure that he goes on to get what he wants. They kept asking to get it read.
It was all the things that Cecilia's hates in a child's book - a journey that "doesn't make sense", a hidden moral (she hates any sort of morality tale) and illogical choices - like why did the parent give the child a stick and why is the child upset about getting a gold ring?
I liked the story - probably for most the reasons that Cecilia didn't
however I was not as into the illustrations.
I think the overall family rating would be a 3.

A boy, after seeing a mariachi band, yearns for a guitar. His father gives him a stick instead. The boy uses the stick to befriend a dog, who gives him a tortilla, which the boy uses to befriend a bird, who gives him some string, and so on it continues. In the end, the boy gets his guitar.

The illustrations are good and the story is generally likable. Plenty of Spanish words are mixed into the text, with a dictionary in the backmatter, along with pictures of instruments and their Spanish names. I liked it!

Love this story, and the idea of paying it forward! (But also paying back and giving thanks!)
