As soon as I picked up this new poetry book, I thought of the animal reports many of my students are doing and I knew I must get this book into the hands of those kids and their teachers! We begin with this ominous verse:

Warning!
If you’re the type who oohs and ahhs
at furry faces, precious paws,
the words ahead may be alarming:
Animals aren’t always charming.

Considering that I’ve been giving stacks of informational animal books to teacher-friends for student research projects, this poetry book comes at exactly the right time. It’s poetry month (hello, Range of Reading Standard!) and each poem about a different animal just begs to be compared to an informational book that will confirm the cool, and sometimes gross, facts. (Integrating Knowledge and Ideas? Check!)

I love that Wheeler never dumbs down her vocabulary (you’ll find query, devise, and formulate all in the second poem). Discussing all the wonderful words she chose will help you hit the Craft and Structure Standard. So one little picture book can help you teach three Common Core State Standards, kick off student-led research projects, enrich vocabulary, and strengthen the love of poetry. I think we’ve just found a new teacher’s pet.

The little girl wants to buy a pet, but her research-focused parents make her do some investigating first. She goes to the farm, the zoo, the woods, and even the pet store, and at each place, she finds something wrong. She is discouraged at the end until she realizes there are some other little “beasties” that she can have.

I really like the concept behind this book; I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that is about a child NOT wanting a pet! The rhymes were all very cute, and followed a couple of different formats, like couplets and limericks. This is definitely one of those poetry books that would be best read aloud…the rhymes lend really well to that sing-songy reading style.

fun one, probably more fun for adults than kids, but still cute

What a fun picture book that not only has humorous poems that stand-alone, but they also tell a hilarious story of a girl who really wants a pet but her parents make her do extensive research before she decides what pet is best for her, and also if she is responsible enough to care for one.

Told in verse, a young girl researches animals in hopes of finding the perfect pet. As she visits the farm, zoo, forest and pet store, and records her observations, she discovers that pets come with problems.

I LOVED this story-book-of-poems. A little girl who wants a pet is told by her parents to do some research first. She observes farm animals, zoo animals, woodland creatures, pet store pets, and more before finally making her decision... a wonderful, twist ending that I won't share because I don't want to be a SPOILER! Funny, must-read-out-loud-able poems with clever illustrations... this is on my recommend list!
