“What was always incomprehensible to me was your total lack of feeling for the suffering and shame you could inflict on me with your words and judgments. It was as though you had no notion of your power. I too, I am sure, often hurt you with what I said, but then I always knew, and it pained me, but I could not control myself, could not keep the words back, I was sorry even while I was saying them. But you struck out with your words without much ado, you weren’t sorry for anyone, either during or afterward, one was utterly defenseless against you”

PAIN :/

When he said 'your effect on me was the effect you could not help having' and 'in the chaos of my childhood mother was the epitome of reason', and 'so you suffered, and so we suffered' and 'in order to achieve equality between us everything that has ever happened would have to be undone, which means that we ourselves would have to be erased'.

Also when he said 'the older I grew, the more I provided you with evidence of my worthlessness' and 'if I was capable of k!lling myself I wouldn't really have to anymore' and 'my appreciation of myself was much more dependent on you than on anything else' and lastly, ‘will my parents also lower me into the grave after a life made happy through their care?'

That part! Amongst many! Absolutely loved this intrusion into my thoughts! This most definitely was not the most heart wrenching, rawest relation of feeling I have ever read and I absolutely did not resonate with any of this! Kafka deserved the world and this candid insight into the abasing trauma that prefaced the sense of anxiety and inadequacy so present in his character and works, was genuinely harrowing.

I relate to this book in a very personal level. So this probably explains a lot why I gave the 5 Stars. I also like the way Kafka writes, its very easy to understand what he is trying to tell.

"L'impossibilità di avere con te un dialogo pacato portò ad un'altra conseguenza, molto ovvia: disimparai a parlare."

"Questa replica - che in parte può esserti anche rivolta contro - non nasce da te mma per l'appunto da me. Così profonda come la diffidenza che nutro verso me stesso, inculcatami da te, non è neppure la tua diffidenza verso gli altri."
