This is what I like to call the plotless genre. This is not an action-driven book, something that I think is very worth knowing before you start it. If you're expecting a typical action-driven plot, put down the book and step away.

In general, I avoid this genre, as it's dominated by men authors and I just can't bring myself to give a shit about men's lives. (Blame it on the male-dominated world we all live in.) This is at once a complicated and simple story. The language is beautiful and it makes me want to re-read Necklace of Kisses (Francesca Lia Block) for some reason. Something about the eloquence with which she describes people's lives.

I keep reading, rather happily, although occasionally I find myself wishing for action. But then I realize that that's like wishing a sci-fi book was actually a romance novel - that simply isn't what it is, so there's no point in wishing for that. Plotless books take some getting used to, particularly if you are accustomed to more action-oriented novels. But stick with it; I think there's great rewards in this charming book.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. To me, 3 is "liked it" and 4 is "really liked it". I'm not sure I really liked it (since books in that category are usually ones I'd read again and I'm not sure I would read this one again). I'm somewhere in between I think.

This is such a great read, such a girlie read. It made me feel so good about being a reader. I could completely relate to the connection Sophie had with books and stories.
