There’s a lot to love here, especially for fans of the character-driven horror novels of the 80s. Comparisons to Stephen King abound, but I also saw Robert R. McCammon, to whom few writers compare. While I enjoyed many things, I was reminded that most artists first hone their craft by imitating the work of others. Quite often the seams are showing in this novel, sometimes a little too blatantly. But there’s so much promise that I look forward to watching Fracassi flesh out his own voice in subsequent books.
