But when he makes a promise to a childhood friend, his word is his honor. But keeping his word means keeping some secrets of his wife. Patience adores her husband, but she struggles with jealousy and when there are certain signs of him keeping secrets from her, and spending time with a woman that obviously wants Julian. Patience doesn't know if she can trust Julian, even if she wants to. But on one fateful night, in trying to save her nieces and nephews, Patience loses her two brothers in a fire, and she ended up severely burned on one side of her body. Patience blames herself for her brothers' deaths, both of whom left behind children. Patience ended up scarred from her burns, and in her mind not worthy of Julian. Now its been almost a year, and she learns that he is blind from a carriage accident and it snaps her out of her own self-doubt and pity, and she sees how much she has damaged their relationship, and she will have to fight to win her husband over...because he will fight her every step of the way. Will Patience be able to prove to Julian of her love for him or will she lose him forever?

Plot and Story Line

The Highlander's Woman was a highly emotional story that just won me over from the beginning. It begins with Julian and Patience being newly married. Normally in most stories, we don't see this circumstance...usually that is the ending. So it was quite fun to see them starting at the beginning of their marriage and see how vital trust is needed in a relationship. Monica Burns is such a wonderful author, and I love how emotional her books are. The heat level she implements are usually higher than the mainstream historical romance, but its equally balanced well with emotion. This is the type of story that will have you spellbound and flipping through those pages as fast as possible. I read this in just a couple of hours, so that should tell you how much I loved it. It is very intense and has some moments that were pretty vividly pictured, and I needed a box of tissues to get through this one because it deals with some traumatizing events. This couple is really tested in this story. They both learn how love doesn't matter unless you have complete trust. This was a story that is one of those full belly satisfying reads, that even though it puts the reader through the ringer. I would highly recommend this book, and even though its the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone, but I so want to read the first two books now. If you have yet to try this author out, I would highly recommend her. I love the way she weaves her stories that are both sensual and poignantly romantic.

The Cover

This is a unique cover, I love the scene with the Scottish background and the gray clouds, it has a softer feel to it.

Overall View

The Highlander's Woman is a fast paced and intense story that is vivid in emotion, plenty of heat and passion, a mix of magic  and mystery; and seeing the power of healing in the face of trauma. A SPICY ROMANCE!!

While this is book 3 in the “The Reckless Rockwoods” Series, it can be read as a standalone book. In fact, this is the first book in the series I’ve read… gasp, I know! I’ve heard nothing but awesome things about this series and after reading THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN, I want to go back and read book 1 & book 2!

I read this in one seating! I started at 11pm and finished at almost 3am! I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to know how things would end! The hero, Julian, is this strong, passionate and loyal man who loves his wife dearly. The heroine, Patience is sassy, smart and loves her husband immensely. She also has a gift that some may find a bit daunting and may not know how to handle. Their love story is one that seems like a fairy tale and she knows it. They met and almost instantly, they both knew… they were meant for each other and things between them moved fast. So they are still learning one another! However, as the blurb says, due to keeping a vow to a friend, he can’t tell his wife the truth and he’s caught in lies! Basically, someone planted the seed of doubt in Patience and it was enough to drive a wedge between them. While Patience asks for time to figure things out, two separate, terrible accidents occur that leave both Julian and Patience damaged and needing to figure out how they will go on with their own lives and if they have room for the other.

Monica does a fantastic job of showing the reader the loving and caring relationship Julian and Patience have prior to circumstances driving them apart, the tragedies that further increases their separation and the journey they both take to try to find their way back to each other. There are a lot of emotions in this book; from laughter to tears of utter sadness. Some moments that were heartbreaking and others were you smiled because the bantering between husband and wife was endearing and pure enjoyment! While there may have been a moment of “please don’t let this be a predicable ‘if he would have just told her’” type of book, Monica proves to the reader that Julian is much too man of his word and circumstances are not as simple as they seem. There are a few twists that readers will not expect! This becomes a breath of fresh air and one that readers will thoroughly enjoy.
If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, after reading THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN, you’ll want to! And if you have read the previous books and need to catch up on the series before the next book is release, what are you waiting for? THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN is a beautifully written love story filled with characters you’ll fall for, beautifully written scenes and enough steaminess that perfectly heat up the pages!

I received a free ARC from Netgalley.com in exchange for my honest review, and prior to my acceptance of the book, I was approached by the author explaining that the sex scenes would be quite steamy. I expected to find a few over the top sex scenes and the rest of the book to be filled with nothing more than the main characters "desire" for one another, I was SO wrong!

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster! I cried more than once at the main characters suffering, and cheered out loud at how the author turned everything around. So now you ask why would I not give this book 5 stars? Simple, the ending. After everything the author put me through in this book, I wanted more out of the ending. I wanted more out of Bensmore. Seriously, if I had just found out
Spoiler my best friend had gotten both of my daughters pregnant
I would be furious, but he was just... kind of... bleh. Ok, maybe that wasn't the ending, but close enough.

This book actually had alot packed into the first few chapters. But it does not sizzle out, oh no this book keeps you glued to the kindle for the entire story.
Patience has a lot to deal with. Should she trust her husband's word, should she see him after she is injured? Should she then go to him when he is later injured in an accident? What are her feelings for him throughtout the story. Its such a rollercoaster!!
Julian tries to hard to be steadfast, but he is always loyal.
