Delicate and finely crafted, alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, these stories seem to me to show Wharton at her best and least redundant. Oddly, this collection seems to be a wonderful way to read her. One thing that seems to come across very strongly is how superbly intelligent her writing is, a fact which doesn't come across quite so well when reading her better-known pieces or any of her novels.
