Great group of characters in and around the American Embassy in Namibia. The story is told from different perspectives: the State Department attorney’s wife, the ambassador, a Fulbright scholar returning to the country of his Peace Corps service, his wife, the wife of a Namibian government official. So many things, e.g., stores, attitudes, food, phrases (“now-now”, meaning I will do one thing, or more, first)reminded me of my time in South Africa. I could relate to a key player saying she loves Africa and doesn’t understand it – my sentiments exactly.
