It was nice to finally get to read these single issue specials that had been released throughout the run of WicDiv, and I do feel like I learned a lot from these--and there are quite a few where I'd be happy to spend more time in. But it is also a bittersweet feeling to finish this volume. I know that there is only one volume left, and I'm going to be sad to have this fascinating tale come to a close. Still, I'm glad I read this, and it may have inspired me to do a re-read of the whole series right before the final volume is released. We'll see.

When I picked this up, I didn't know that the title - "Old is the New New" - had a double meaning. It is a collection of previously published issues of the comic that were released between other main story arc volumes, AND it's historical fiction.

I really loved getting to see the pantheon in different historical periods, and would honestly love to read a spin-off series that's just stories of them in the previous 90-year intervals (why did Kieron and Jamie decide that number of years, I wonder?).

The main, longest story in this volume - set between WWI and WWII, at a key time of technological and anthropophilosophical change - is primarily full pages of text with the occasional illustration. I understood the reasoning and value of this extensive image-free prose, but it also bogged my flow down, similarly to the pirate ship side story in [b:Watchmen|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442239711l/472331._SY75_.jpg|4358649].

I was hoping there would be more forward progress with the story line. This was another issue with guest artists. I didn’t care for this one very much. I also hated the whole issue that was written out as a story. When I read comics I want to not focus as much as my usual reading. I could not with that issue. Hopefully the last volume makes up for this one.

The history that this volume gave to the story was nice. I liked that we were taken from different places in time to see how some of the godhoods ended.

I found the funnies at the end to be mostly weird.

Everything I've read in this series up to this point has been worth it just to read the funny version with dogs, and with chairs. 10/10 would recommend.
