What an excellent story. This is a proper page turner which stands being read quickly (two days in my case). Great characters, an exciting story, and a clever use of history as the backdrop to the tale.

Can't wait to read the next one!

I owned this book for almost ten years before I read it and, honestly, I have no idea what took me so long! The language of this series is a bit dated, but that's because it is set in the 1800's around Napoleonic wars. It is, essentially, the war with Napoleon with dragons. If you like history and dragons, this book and series is definitely for you.

Horatio Hornblower meets HTTYD and somehow it works and feels like the most natural thing in the world.

Obviously there were dragons at the battle of Trafalgar, you just forgot about that because it was like saying there were muskets there.

I would call this a genre bender. Feels like historical fiction. It doesn't even feel sensational.

But the characters are likeable, the story interesting, and I could see myself reading more. Because who wouldn't want to hang out with Will and Temeraire?

This was a solid story but the depiction of women was horrible. Some things didn't make sense and Laurence is just a cardboard box. A lot of things were unexplained or could have been better developed.
