This small self-contained addition to the Kingkiller Chronicle was quaint and pleasant but also fantastical and mischievous with flashes of darkness. Although I loved the other Kingkiller Chronicle books, it has been a while since I’ve read them and I was worried I might be lost reading this one but I think it was good on its own. I know there were a few things I missed that referred to the main story but I don’t think it detracted from my enjoyment of the story. All in all, it was a very quaint morsel of a story.

Read if you like whimsical mystic stories about flawed characters with a satisfying arc.

It’s not book 3, but it is a really great deep dive into Bast’s character and I loved it

A lovely little novella. I really enjoyed this book. It is a re-write of Lightening Tree but stands alone as a good book all on its own. We get to know Bast much better and his character, desires, thoughts etc. Bast is such a fascinating character and it’s great to see how he operates.

I laughed a lot and bemoaned and was intrigued. So happy to have another Rothfuss book. Even if it wasn’t DOS.

Like anything written by Rothfuss, this book is beautiful. Despite the themes I've added to the content warnings, it's mostly a charming and clever book, filled with mysteries and (some) answers.

Bonus points for being explicitly trans supportive, twice, and for making Bast's obviously fluid sexuality canon. The best thing about it is the language/prose, though. This little book was everything I wanted and more.
