If it weren’t for the wider kingkiller links and a couple of beautifully written sentences, I didn’t really enjoy this. It’s fine. But not one I’m likely  recommend to read or reread.

Dislikes:
- rothfuss still struggles with writing female characters outside of the male gaze. It’s less ick than previous publications. But it feels like he sees male characters as default characters with agency and nuance.
- the artwork of human famous was a bit over wrought.

Likes
- subtle references to what happened off page. Eg Nettie and Jessom.
- weaving in the day
- tantalising mystery of the embrils.
- a couple of beautifully written sentences. Which I can’t find or share easily because I read the hardback

As stated in the Author's Note for this book, Bast is the good wolf. This book was essentially a day in the life of Bast. There were no conflicts or things to overcome. Just Bast trading secrets and favours with the townspeople's children - and even helping one to escape a bad domestic situation. It was a nice easy read with excellent illustrations provided by Nate Taylor.

Like anything written by Rothfuss, this book is beautiful. Despite the themes I've added to the content warnings, it's mostly a charming and clever book, filled with mysteries and (some) answers.

Bonus points for being explicitly trans supportive, twice, and for making Bast's obviously fluid sexuality canon. The best thing about it is the language/prose, though. This little book was everything I wanted and more.
