While the poetry in this volume isn't on the same level as Ace Boggess' more recent work, it definitely isn't worthy of the one-star rating another reviewer left here. It's interesting to see how writers change over the course of their careers, but it's also sometimes hard to go backwards with a writer you really like right now, since their older work is usually less perfected (or at least less perfect for you). I think that's the problem I'm having here. This work is earnest, sad, and sometimes overwrought. I much prefer the kinds of poems Boggess writes today, more quotidian and less mannered, but that's entirely my own opinion. Certainly these poems are technically proficient, and if you happen upon a copy of this book, it would not be mistake to pick it up.
