I read the third one before I read this one and I would say this one's better. Although it's much grislier, I do think the intensity is there more and you feel more like you're in it. I enjoyed all the descriptions and explanations of various investigative technologies. Though being a longtime fan of the show I'm still getting used to this version of Dr. Brennan, and also the books being set in Canada- I just have to say that Canada doesn't quite capture the imagination for me as much as DC. All in all, though, I'm looking forward to reading more of the series.

Wow, I can't believe I finally finished this. It was very slow paced and I was bored of it for so long but that may be due to the fact that it was Kathy Reich's first book. I have yet to read the rest of the series but I hope its somewhat better. I will say though, when I got to the end I actually found it interesting. You have to be very patient for this book. I nearly stopped reading it multiple times but I kept going! Overall, I think reading it was worth it in the end because it got interesting, but I am very bummed that it is nothing like my favorite show, bones. The show is also 10 times better. I expected the books to be like the show, but they are not, The only similarity is Temperance Brennan being an anthropologist. That put aside, I recommend being patient but reading it because some parts were actually fascinating though I had no idea what was said sometimes.

Spoiler!

I feel like something may be going on between Ryan and Temperance, and since I am such a romance lover, I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops. I was very sad about Gabby's death and I got very frustrated with Kathy at times for being oblivious to the dangers around her, but I guess that happens with every horror movie/book. She could have saved Gabby if she took her seriously. Its better safe than sorry, but I guess she didn't understand that slogan. Also, when Kathy almost got stabbed and murdered in her own home, it was definitely heightening my adrenaline. I'm happy she escaped and survived though, since I am one for happy endings.

Lovely book. A bit technically but then again the author does the job of the character so that’s to be expected. The French Canadian is a bit difficult to follow at times but still a good book.

I don't really know how to feel about this book. I think if I wasn't such a huge fan of the show, I would like this a lot better, and objectively as a series on its own its pretty good, but there's too many differences and I just don't connect to this Tempe like I do to show Tempe. Overall, the mystery was pretty good and Claudel was the perfect love-to-hate character.

Some plot lines were definitely unnecessary, it felt like there were a few loose ends, but still a fun mystery to follow.

Not my typical cup of tea, but it was recommended by a friend for a lover of police procedurals like Law & Order. Also, I was looking to watch the show but wanted to read the book first as I often do. Turns out the book and the TV show share a main character's name and profession but that's pretty much where the similarities end. It was pretty grisly and overly descriptive of heinous crimes for my taste, but I will say I generally enjoyed the storyline and it kept my attention until the end. 3.25 stars.
