This book shares a lot of themes with "American Fiction" the movie, for good reason. I also had to look back at when this book was first published as there were several pieces that ring true to more recent events. Every person working towards being anti-racist should read this book.

I listened to an audio book of this, a first for me, and not a format I would usually choose. The narrator’s voice didn’t seem to be a good fit- swinging between sounding like Helen Hunt or Jodie Foster and a robotic automation. Distracting, in short. I might have to revisit this to go deeper into a few of the poems I spaced out to, but on the whole, particular the Serena/tennis poems, this was powerful stuff.

Heartbreaking, rage inducing, makes you remember the things you are always remembering to forget. The images have a wider range, one photo of a Danish tennis star shocked me, I somehow missed that unbelievable moment of history or else blocked it out. I wish I could use the word 'unbelievable' for more things in this book but as unbelievable as it all is, it's also so very painfully believable. Take the space to own the feels or else burn alive in your own fury.
