Not as good as the first book and just a setup for another book, which doesn’t become clear until about halfway through.

This was bad, gang, like shockingly bad.

Rainbow Rowell has a very spotty track record with me. It's either a big hit, like Landline or Eleanor & Park, or it's something so close to great that it ends up being a disappointment, like Fangirl or Carry On. That said, even though I was kind of disappointed in Carry On, I still rated it a 4/5 and considered Simon and Baz to be very likable characters with excellent chemistry who were just lacking the time and space to grow, as their story was limited to just the one book at the time.

So, even when Rainbow is off her game, I still usually enjoy her, and I was mildly excited to see where Simon and Baz's relationship went now that it, in theory, had the time and space it so desperately needed. Instead I got this.

Carry On is a fun and whimsical homage to Harry Potter and a love letter to all things fanfiction. It lacked a certain depth but it was a nice little book. Wayward Son, by contrast, is a slog of a book that challenges its reader to try to enjoy it despite being the most boring, off-kilter sequel I've seen in a long time.

This book was a true waste of my time and I hope to forget every detail of it soon. It doesn't ruin Carry On, but it does it no favors. The fact that this exists in the state it exists in is baffling to me and Rainbow and her editor(s) should be ashamed this made it to print. This was clearly written as an attempt (either by Rainbow or someone on her team) to just cash in on the Simon Snow recognition and it sadly shows. This book is empty and trite and that's all there is.

would have been a 4 if it wasn’t for the ending and how things were resolved, but alas—
