oxnard_montalvo's review against another edition
Slightly dizzying read after Mr Loverman: a gaggle of interconnected stories that centre around a hard scrabble life, eking out moments of pleasure and solidarity. Lot doesn't get too deep with its feelings. They are evidently there, but anything resembling a confession of affection is tantamount to weakness so they remain unspoken, expressed through (not always tender) action instead.
Have to confess not all the stories hit the mark for me. The POV running throughout the stories was distinctive in terms of writing style, there were definitely lines that made me pause; it also faded into the background at times, which might have been by design, but it also gave the stories a strange kind of shapelessness and characters I had encountered previously weren't immediately recognisable.
Gloria was a standout, as was the story of Poke and Rod, the Chupacabra for it's unexpected weirdness lol.
