A seamless combination of two top crime writers. It is hard to know who wrote what. I think William would be happy with Ian's writing. Pick it up folks

Really enjoyed it now curious how much Rankin is in in, as few times sure you could have swapped out the pages for any early Rebus.

4.5 stars: Ian Rankin masterfully completes William McIlvanney's unfinished prequel to the Laidlaw series. The blend between the two authors is so utterly seamless that Rankin has essentially performed a pitch-perfect ventriloquism trick.

Komme nicht rein. Die Figuren sind alle wie hinter Milchglas, weit weg und ich bin ihnen gegenüber eher gleichgültig.

Whether credit is due mostly to Ian Rankin, to the editor, or equally to them both, this reads as though it was written in its entirety by William McIlvanney. And it's a bloody good origin story as well.

Dark, atmospheric and a pleasure to read. The menacing underbelly of Glasgow is exposed through a wonderful set of characters and dialogue. Laidlaw, particularly, is great creation. Really excellent.

I listened to the audio version. Dark and gritty and smart. I've never read McIlvanney but I'm a big fan of Ian Rankin. This is a quick read and leaves you wanting to know more about Jack Laidlaw.
