Halfway through this book, I wasn't sure what to think of it. The characters are messy, and I thought they were unlikeable at first, but they grew on me as I couldn't put the book down. I definitely think the second half was a big triumph over the first, hence the 4 stars. I like that we're left to wonder how Ben and Mike's relationship will end up. All in all, I thought it was very engaging and worth the relative slog of the first half of the book.

This book was beautifully raw. Benson and Mike could have been written to be more likeable but that would have completely taken away from the book as a whole. The way the parents are woven into this story is exceptional. Loved this more than I thought I would.

Started really good and then fell off. Wasn’t bad on the whole but it didn’t have me held the entire time

Really enjoyed this book about relationships, family, identity. The characters felt real and the plot carried, despite its largely connecting to the mundanity of life. Loved all the descriptions of Japanese food! Washington is a talented writer.

Really wanted to like this book, but the plot and humor just didn’t do it for me.
